The Deal with Pesticides

  • Started using in the 50s after WWII to kill bugs
  • 20 years later, they started to realize the harmful side effects
  • Pesticides have changed, but are still used today
  • Pesticides are still a known carcinogen
  • 98% of the population finds traces of pesticides in your body

The Dirty Dozen

  • The TOP offender is strawberries!
  • Spinach
  • Kale, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens
  • Nectarines & Peaches
  • Apples & Pears
  • Grapes (Wine!)
  • Cherries
  • Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Tomatoes
  • These foods have THIN SKINS so they absorb the pesticides

Farmer’s Market Tips

  • These foods are not always organic
  • ASK if they spray their crops 
  • May not be able to AFFORD the organic certification but ARE using the practices

Is Organic WORTH the price?

  • Organic is not ALWAYS more expensive than conventional
  • Whole Foods have organic produce on sale, especially as a prime member
  • Frozen, organic produce is often very affordable

Organic & Biodynamic Practices

  • Only 5% of purchases are organic
  • Organic farmers can not use any GMO seeds & cows cannot eat GMO foods
  • There are no GMO ingredients in organic foods
  • Biodynamic farmers are also doing good by the planet
  • Animals are fed natural diets and are free roaming
  • Prevents chemicals leaching into the ground
  • Improves biodiversity
