The Deal with Pesticides
- Started using in the 50s after WWII to kill bugs
- 20 years later, they started to realize the harmful side effects
- Pesticides have changed, but are still used today
- Pesticides are still a known carcinogen
- 98% of the population finds traces of pesticides in your body
The Dirty Dozen
- The TOP offender is strawberries!
- Spinach
- Kale, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens
- Nectarines & Peaches
- Apples & Pears
- Grapes (Wine!)
- Cherries
- Bell Peppers
- Celery
- Tomatoes
- These foods have THIN SKINS so they absorb the pesticides
Farmer’s Market Tips
- These foods are not always organic
- ASK if they spray their crops
- May not be able to AFFORD the organic certification but ARE using the practices
Is Organic WORTH the price?
- Organic is not ALWAYS more expensive than conventional
- Whole Foods have organic produce on sale, especially as a prime member
- Frozen, organic produce is often very affordable
Organic & Biodynamic Practices
- Only 5% of purchases are organic
- Organic farmers can not use any GMO seeds & cows cannot eat GMO foods
- There are no GMO ingredients in organic foods
- Biodynamic farmers are also doing good by the planet
- Animals are fed natural diets and are free roaming
- Prevents chemicals leaching into the ground
- Improves biodiversity
